Biography
F. Douglas Swesty is a Research Associate Professor in the Department of Physics & Astronomy at Stony Brook University and an Affiliate of the Stony Brook University Institute for Advanced Scientific Computing. He completed his PhD at Stony Brook in 1993, then joined the University of Illinois as a postdoc and later as a Research Scientist at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications and as a Visiting Assistant Professor in the Department of Astronomy. He returned to Stony Brook as a faculty member in the Department of Physics and Astronomy in 1999.
Research
His research covers computational physics along with nuclear and relativistic astrophysics. Current work focuses on highly parallel algorithms for radiation hydrodynamics and on methods for quantifying uncertainty in numerical simulations.
Related interests include numerical models of binary neutron star mergers, the explosion mechanism of core collapse supernovae, the neutrino and gravitational wave signatures of supernovae, general relativistic radiation hydrodynamics, and the equation of state of hot, dense matter.
